Hemp produces over 100 terpenes; a handful show up consistently enough across cultivars to matter for product formulation.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common hemp terpenes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Myrcene<\/strong> is earthy and musky, found in mangoes and hops, and is the most abundant terpene in most hemp cultivars. <strong>Limonene<\/strong> is citrus-forward, found in lemon and orange peel. <strong>Pinene<\/strong> is sharp and green, the scent of pine needles. <strong>Linalool<\/strong> is floral, the dominant note in lavender. <strong>Caryophyllene<\/strong> is peppery and woody, and is unusual among terpenes in that it&#8217;s known to interact directly with the same receptor system cannabinoids do. <strong>Humulene<\/strong> is earthy and slightly woody, shared with hops and part of what gives beer its aroma.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why terpenes matter beyond scent<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terpene content is part of what distinguishes one hemp cultivar&#8217;s effect profile from another, even at similar cannabinoid levels, and it&#8217;s part of the &#8220;entourage effect&#8221; theory referenced on our <a href=\"\/ro\/cannabinoids-explained-cbd-cbg-cbn-and-beyond\/\">Cannabinoids Explained<\/a> page. Terpene-infused or terpene-preserved products, like sport-formulated oils, are made to retain this profile rather than strip it out during extraction.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reading a label<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a product lists a terpene profile or &#8220;full-spectrum terpenes,&#8221; it means the aromatic compounds were preserved through extraction rather than added back synthetically afterward. Not every product needs this; flavored e-liquids and gummies, for example, typically use food-grade flavoring instead.
